The Motown Museum (Hitsville U.S.A.). The two-story house on West Grand Boulevard where Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959 and where Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, the Temptations, and the Jackson 5 all recorded their early hits. The museum preserves the original Studio A (where the Motown sound was recorded) and includes original costumes, instruments, and gold records. One-hour visit, walking distance from the New Center neighborhood or a short rideshare from downtown. One of the most important American music history stops in the country.

Detroit-style pizza. The rectangular deep-dish pizza with the caramelized cheese-crusted edges is a genuine local invention, and the local scene is one of the best in the country. Buddy's Pizza (the 1946 original, with multiple locations including downtown) is the classic starting point. Cloverleaf Bar (Eastpointe) is the historical rival, and Loui's Pizza (Hazel Park) is the local favorite for serious pizza tourism. Order a square-pan four-corner with pepperoni; that is the definitive Detroit-style order.

Coney dogs on Lafayette Boulevard. American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island have shared a downtown Detroit block since 1917 and are the two anchors of the Detroit coney dog tradition. The two restaurants operate side-by-side and share a wall, with a decades-long rivalry over which serves the definitive Detroit coney (a hot dog with chili, mustard, and diced onion on a steamed bun). Try both back-to-back for the full experience. A three-block walk from the stadium and open 24 hours.

Eastern Market. The largest historic public market in the United States, running Saturdays year-round since 1891, one mile east of downtown. The Saturday market has more than 150 vendors selling produce, meat, flowers, prepared food, and Detroit artisan goods. Bert's Marketplace is a live-music blues venue in the same district. Supino Pizzeria (arguably the best pizza in Detroit, Neapolitan-style rather than Detroit-style) is a Saturday morning walk. Eastern Market on Thanksgiving Black Friday is the ideal Friday morning after the Lions game.

Corktown and Michigan Central Station. The oldest neighborhood, west of downtown, redeveloped over the past decade into one of the top food and drink corridors in the Midwest. Slows Bar BQ (the best local BBQ), Ottava Via (Italian), Selden Standard (New American), and Astro Coffee are the standard picks. Michigan Central Station (the abandoned 1913 rail station Ford Motor Company restored and reopened in 2024 as an innovation campus) is worth a walk-through even without a tour ticket; the restoration is one of the great American architectural comeback stories.

The Institute of Arts. One of the top American art museums, located in the Midtown Cultural Center about 10 minutes from downtown by QLine. Home to Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals, a 27-panel mural commissioned by the DIA in 1932 and one of the most important pieces of American public art. The museum also holds strong European, African American, and modern collections. Free admission for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties; general admission for visitors runs $14.

The riverfront and Belle Isle. The redeveloped RiverWalk runs from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle Park, connecting the Renaissance Center to the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre and multiple public parks. Belle Isle is the 982-acre island park in the middle of the Detroit River (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central Park) and is worth a 30-minute rideshare and a walk for the skyline views. The Yacht Club, the Belle Isle Aquarium, and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory are all on the island.

The Windsor cross-border option. Windsor, Ontario, sits directly across the river, connected to downtown by the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge. The 15 to 20-minute border crossing (a valid passport or enhanced driver's license is required) opens up Canadian cuisine, Caesar's Windsor casino, and the Windsor riverfront for a light half-day trip. A NEXUS lane pass makes the border crossing dramatically faster.
